Very perceptive analysis. I think Google itself is coming around to look at it differently. They are developing Flash based GUI- or so it appears from some of their job postings. On the other hand, they want a browser based world.

Interesting post. As a guy who's racking his brain what kind of cloud infrastructure to use, this discussion is on the spot.

Unfortunately, when I got to MS motivation, it all sounds like sugar coated idealization, which somehow doesn't strike me as the right set of reasons...

I would say:
MS realized it might be left behind on the web, and having lost the battle for search, must claim the new cloud landscape.

Microsoft sells IDEs, but that doesn't strike me as a good enough reason for it.

I would rather side with a company who's financial rationale is clear and expected, and it's a rationale I can live with, rather than trust alleged good intentions.

I have to agree with Brandon. From the first paragraph on the "What is AWS?" page:

"...you can take advantage of Amazon.com’s global computing infrastructure, that is the backbone of Amazon.com’s $15 billion retail business and transactional enterprise..."

Miles, based on the conversations I have had, both with people at AMZN and in the industry, my summation is more on point than not. If my conversations are off message, I would love to chat with someone at AMZN who would tell me different. Do you have a contact for me?

Your basic premise on Amazon is incorrect. AWS was not created to make use of spare capacity from the retail operations. In fact, it runs an entirely distinct infrastructure (some of which is used by the retail site - but never the other way about). Might be worth updating your post to reflect this.
