Every Developer Deserves More Memory

October 19th, 2009 by Brandon Watson

As part of a mini-campaign I am kicking off at the San Francisco StackOverflow Dev Days, I am upgrading any developer’s laptop to 2x2GB of RAM.  I really wanted to have some 2x4GB kits, but those were a bit out of the price range.  I am here all day – the guy in the bright orange shirt.  We will be doing a second act of this at the Seattle Dev Days, so if you are coming to the Seattle event, bring your laptop.

Why are we doing this?  Because every developer deserves more memory.  I don’t care if you are on a MacBook.  Running Ubuntu.  Using Eclipse.  Targeting MySQL.  It. Don’t. Matter.  Come see me and we will get you developing faster, because RAM makes everything better.

Love to see that people here appreciate what we’re doing. (Search Twitter)

  • I love being a road warrior, and I love my toys.

If you’re going to be working from the road for fun (or out of dire need), I highly recommend the Samsung N120.

Thanks again for the RAM in Seattle. One thing to note on some netbooks they only handle up to 2GB, so you'll need to disable the onboard RAM in the BIOS.

    Cheers!

I hope my company understands it.

Very nice, but what about netbooks? I have an msi wind that I use when I travel. It only has one slot which is currently is at 1 GB.
  • Awesome idea.
  • Thanks Mark. It's been so awesome to just hang out with developers and upgrading the notebooks. It's like being the keg operator at a party!
  • I'm probably going to steal your idea for a tech meetup in the coming months... as sort of a surprise gift for coming.
  • Hit me on Twitter and I can walk you through the pitfalls and how I did it. Turns out there are some variances in memory, and vendors don't like to sell memory in large lots. :)

Is this some secret agenda to make software less memory efficient, and thus enforce users to buy more RAM :)
  • Uh oh...someone figured us out. ;) There's no agenda. Any computer. Any OS. I've even got the DDR3 memory for the shiny new MacBook Pros!
